ARC DE TRIOMPHE

SIGHTS ARC DE TRIOMPHE PARIS
At the top of the Champs-Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe de l’Etoile is the most prominent symbol of French national history.

The structure was begun in 1806 on the orders of Napoleon I in honour of the French army, and finished in 1836 under the reign of Louis Philippe, the Arc de Triomphe combines the commemorative with the symbolic. The monumnet sits at the top of the Champs-Elysees, in the Place de l'Etoile now commonly known as the Place Charles de Gaulle.

The Arc de Triomphe's massive piers are decorated with bas relieves depicting scenes from the revolutionary era (including the First Empire). To the right, facing the Champs Elysees is the Marseillaise by Rude (the departure of the volunteers to the front in 1792); to the left is Napoleon's Triumph of 1810 by Cortot. The resistance of 1814 and the peace of 1815 are on the other side facing away from the old city.

Below the center of the Arc is the tomb of the unknown soldier. If you look carefully, you can see the following inscription on the ground: “Ici repose un soldat français mort pour la Patrie” (“Here lies a French soldier who died for his country”). The presence of this anonymous soldier, buried in 1920, has contributed to the elevation of the Arc de Triomphe to the level of a powerful patriotic symbol.

With its majestic architecture inspired by ancient Roman monuments, you can imagine the Arc standing proudly over the return of the Emperor’s ashes in 1840 or the burial of Victor Hugo in 1885. Similarly, the parade of the victorious armies of 1919 and 1944 is stamped into its history. Standing at the top, over fifty metres from the ground, you can watch Parisian life from up high and contemplate the world famous views created by Parisian architects, the most illustrious being Baron Haussmann.

Earlier plans for the site proposed around 1758 included building a giant elephant housing ballrooms and theatre in the midst of the square. These plans were never realized and Napoleon soon made his own which were eventually completed as the Arc we see today.

To get a close look at the Arc de Triomphe

Walk an underpass on the Champs Elysees or Avenue de la Grande Armee that leads you to the centre of the plaza. If you are able, climb to the top,the view is worth the effort.
