NAPOLEON'S TOMB

SIGHTS NAPOLEAN'S TOMB PARIS
Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor Napoléon I (b.1769), died on the Isle of St. Helena in 1821 where he had been in exile ever since 1815. In 1840 his remains were returned to France and this magnificent memorial that was built between 1843-53 now serves as his final resting place. National funerals followed the return of the emperor’ s remains, which were transferred to the Invalides on December 15th 1840, while his tomb there was still being constructed (1843- 53). Les Invalides originally was built by King Louis XIV as a hospital for injured soldiers. Also on the grounds is also the Musee de l'Armee, the French war museum.

The tomb was created by a major excavating inside the Dome church attached to Invalides. The body of the Emperor Napoléon I was laid there on April 2nd 1861. Visitors can observe the giant sarcophagus (13 x 6.5 x 14.25) which is crafted in red porphyry from Russia, placed on a green granite base from the Vosges, and is circled by a crown of laurels and inscriptions, reminders of the great victories of the Empire. A statue of the Emperor, bearing the imperial emblems, was erected at the back of the crypt, above the tombstone under which the King of Rome lies. The Dome Church also houses the sepultures of two of Napoléon's brothers, Jérôme and Joseph Bonaparte, and Napoléon's son as well as some military figures.
